'69 XLH - First of many build posts

Greetings. I guess I will be known as Dave j.r. here. It sucks being called "junior" by people younger than you... but Dave s.r. is definitely older than me. I am currently building a 1969 XLH. I bought it in the form you see below. It did not run, but the seller said he had it running a few months ago and had some electrical problems.

So my intention was to ride it around for 50 to 100 miles stock then take it apart and chop it.... that didn't happen. In just trying to get it running I had a few snags. I replaces the battery, the bendix gear, the solenoid, and patched a few wires. No dice there. The only thing I didn't replace was the starter. So I thought, Fuck it, it's going to be kick start eventually, might as well do that now. So I buy the parts needed and that puts us here

You may notice that the compensator gear is still there, but the clutch is off. Yeah, that's where our story goes sour. Trying to get the chain on without taking that gear off to start with leads us to this.

So, at this point its time to strip the bike and get choppin'. I pulled off a good amount and I am almost done. While I fix the engine, I will send the frame off to be hard tailed so I can finally ride this bike. Here's where I am at now

  4. you could get the chain back on without taking the compensator off but only if you would take the clutch hub back off.
